Seminar on “Ratification of the Migrants Rights UN Convention 1990 and Implementation of Bangladesh Overseas Employment Policy” supported by DanChurchAid on 1st July, 2009

WARBE Development Foundation organized a Seminar on “Ratification of the Migrants Rights UN Convention 1990 and Implementation of Bangladesh Overseas Employment Policy” supported by DanChurchAid on 1st July, 2009 from 9.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. at The National Press Club, VIP Lounge (Report of the Seminar).

On July 1, 2003, the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families is entering into force. WARBE DF along with partner organizations observing this day as migrants rights solidarity day.

The International Convention for “The Protection of All Migrant Workers and Member of their Families” is the most extended and comprehensive instrument to protect the rights of migrants and member of their families. The convention seeks to play a role in preventing and eliminating all forms of exploitation, discrimination, abuse and harassment of migrant workers in countries of origin, transit and destination. The major objective of the Convention is to foster respect for migrants’ human rights, because Migrants are not only workers, they are also human beings. In a regular or irregular situation, all migrants are entitled to a minimum degree of protection. So, now is the crucial time to take proper attempts for the ratification of UN Convention 1990. By ratifying the convention Bangladesh will be in a better position to bargain with other countries, especially in connection with the protection of our workers abroad.

In South Asia, Bangladesh only the country adopted a Migration Policy, named BOEP. To implementing this policy and streamlining the labor migration process with accountability and transparency and better governance of this vital sector for foreign currency earning, we need a comprehensive legal framework and the UN Convention 1990 would be an idle instrument for formulation of the rights based legislations. In such a backdrop, a national level seminar is much required to speak up the plights of rights of migrant workers.
