The Centre for Research in Ethnic Relations (CRER) in the School of Health and Social Studies, University of Warwick is pleased to announce the Conference on African Transnational and Return Migration for Homeland Development from the Perspectives of Euro-African Relations and Latin American Experience due in July 2009. Seasoned and upcoming researchers will be invited to present papers within different themes to stimulate discussions and to facilitate charting the way forward in African research, policy and programme interests in the near future.

The International Conference on Population and Development aims to bring together researchers, scientists, engineers, and scholar students to exchange and share their experiences, new ideas, and research results about all aspects of Population and Development, and discuss the practical challenges encountered and the solutions adopted.

PAPER SUBMISSION

All full paper submissions will be peer reviewed and evaluated based on originality, technical and/or research content/depth, correctness, relevance to conference, contributions, and readability. The full paper submissions will be chosen based on technical merit, interest, applicability, and how well they fit a coherent and balanced technical program.

The aim of this international conference is to examine the past and present impact of diasporas and migration on nation, community, identity and subjectivity, culture and the imagination, place and space, emotion, politics, law and values.

This year’s forum will mainly focus on remittances to and within the African continent. The objective of the forum is to raise awareness among different stakeholders in the remittance market and highlight the potential benefits that remittances can bring to the social and economic development of the African continent.

Objectives of the Forum

The Forum brought key players together to raise awareness of the challenges and opportunities of remittances and to shed light on the rural dimension of these flows, estimated at 40 per cent of total flows. In addition, the Forum explored the links between remittances and banking, technology and microfinance, and discuss ways to integrate development agencies’ agendas on remittances. The two-day event included a series of roundtable discussions and working groups devoted to an in-depth exchange of ideas and business models for urban and rural remittances worldwide. Sessions within the Forum covered such topics as financial inclusion, migrant investments, gender dimension, technology, innovation and development.

Applications are invited from both researchers and policy-makers to participate in this conference organized by Sussex Centre for Migration Research and the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance and sponsored by the European Network of Excellence on 'International Migration, Integration and Social Cohesion in Europe' (IMISCOE).
